Volunteer for a
CGA Tournament
How Tournament Volunteers Help
You don’t need prior experience or extensive Rules of Golf expertise to volunteer at the CGA. Our events rely on volunteers for many roles, with opportunities for different levels of availability, experience, and Rules of Golf knowledge.
Volunteer opportunities include:
Player Assistant/Spotter:
Helps players locate shots on blind tee shots. One of the simplest roles to take on, and it makes a real difference in keeping pace of play on track.
Pace of Play Monitor:
Tracks where groups stand on the course and flags any group falling behind.
Starter:
Gets each group off the tee on time, hands out scorecards and local rules sheets, and helps prepare players for their round.
Scorer:
Assists with scorecard collection and verification and helps ensure scores are recorded accurately.
Rules Official:
Helps players correctly apply the Rules of Golf during competition. Most have completed a PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshop.
Many of our most experienced volunteers serve as Rules Officials and are prepared to assist wherever needed throughout an event. Rules Officials typically have advanced Rules knowledge and have completed additional training, including PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshops.

What You Can Expect as a Volunteer
As you continue on your journey as a CGA volunteer, we are here to help you each step of the way. You will learn many of your responsibilities by working with other volunteers at events, but the CGA also provides training that will help you become more comfortable and capable as an official.
At tournaments, lunch and snacks are provided to every rules official at every CGA event. Travel and lodging costs aren't reimbursed, but as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, these expenses may be tax-deductible. Every official receives a CGA shirt, hat, and gift during the annual rules official training day, and exclusive CGA merchandise is available for purchase at a discount.
Education
-
Free Introductory Rules Seminars: The CGA holds free two-hour seminars across the Carolinas each winter/spring, open to anyone who wants a working knowledge of the Rules of Golf before getting more involved.
-
Annual Rules Official Training Day: Held each winter/spring, this one-day session covers starting, scoring, officiating, the Rules of Golf, and course marking and set-up.
-
USGA/PGA Rules of Golf Workshops: For officials ready to go further, the USGA/PGA of America offers 2-day and 4-day workshops. The CGA doesn't require this to volunteer, but officials serious about advancing typically attend at least once every four years.
-
Education Reimbursement: Officials who complete a USGA Rules School and work 10 tournament days in a calendar year qualify for a reimbursement of up to $500.
